This is a wonderful and colorful Handmade Hmong Tribal handbag. Hill Tribes are a nomadic people who have migrated from Southeast Asia to areas as far north as the mountains of Tibet. They live on wet-rice cultivation, fishing and handicrafts. They are known for the beautiful decorative patterns of their hand-sewn textiles. According to Hmong this technique was traditionally used by the Hmong people to decorate clothing and make it bright and beautiful. It was passed down from mothers to daughters. Hmong means "Human being" or "Free People" in the Hmong language. Anthropologists trace their heritage as far back as Siberia and Central Asia. The Hmong have in time mostly settled in Burma, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. In In ancient times, the embroidered patterns served double duty to decorate and to communicate. According to oral history, long ago when the Hmong were still concentrated in China, they were forbidden to use their original, written language, which was made up of picture symbols. So the women started sewing the symbols into their skirts to create messages, disguising them as patterns. Each Hmong handbag is made from vintage Hmong fabric sourced from Vietnam. Each purse features handcrafted cross stitch embroidery designs that are unique to each Hill Tribe village.
